With lockdown ending, I set myself a new challenge: to make 100 street portraits of strangers. Here is a selection of those portraits.
I wanted to challenge myself by putting myself outside my comfort zone. After over a year’s worth of social restrictions, this was a refreshing experience. I found myself enjoying the process massively, perhaps even more than the photos I made.
If you’ve seen my other photos, you’ll know that portraiture isn’t my strong suit. Henri Cartier-Bresson said that “your first 10,000 photos are your worst“. Well, these are my first 100 street portraits, and I’m hoping that the next 100 will be better.
These photos were made between May – July 2021 on my Hasselblad 500C/M with Kodak 400TX and Portra 400 film. I photographed mainly around the West End, during protests, football-related festivities, and just on regular weekends. This project is ongoing; I will continue to build on this series.
